How to Tell Your Family You're Polyamorous (Or Whether You Should)

Deciding whether to tell family you're polyamorous is a genuinely personal call, and there's no version of this article that can tell you the right answer for your specific family. What's more useful is a framework for thinking it through, since the decision usually gets tangled up with anxiety that makes it hard to think clearly.

Questions worth sitting with first

  • What are you actually hoping happens by telling them? Understanding, acceptance, or just not having to hide something?

  • What's the realistic range of reactions, from best case to worst case, and can you handle the worst case if it happens?

  • Do you need to tell everyone at once, or is there value in starting with the person most likely to respond well?

If you do decide to have the conversation, it tends to go better when you lead with what the relationship actually looks like day to day, rather than starting with definitions and terminology. Most people relate better to "here's who's important in my life and why" than to an abstract explanation of polyamory as a concept.

There's no obligation to come out on anyone else's timeline, including a poly partner's. This is your family and your relationship with them, and you're allowed to move at whatever pace actually protects your wellbeing.

Velvet Rabbit doesn't require members to justify their relationship structure to strangers either, verification and stated intentions do that work quietly, in the background.
