Poly Dating Etiquette: How to Date Someone Who's Already Partnered

Dating someone who's already in a relationship, whether that's a nesting partner or a longer-term poly partner, comes with its own etiquette that's easy to get wrong if you've only dated monogamously before.
Reasonable things to ask early
How their existing relationship structure works: hierarchy, boundaries, how much their partner knows and is comfortable with.
What level of involvement, if any, they expect between you and their existing partner.
How they handle scheduling and time, since dating someone with an existing partner usually means less availability than dating someone single.
What actually counts as a red flag
Their partner not knowing you exist. Vagueness about whether their relationship is actually open, as opposed to them just deciding unilaterally to see other people. Pressure to move faster than you're comfortable with because they're worried about losing you to someone with fewer complications.
Being someone's poly partner isn't a lesser version of dating someone single. It's just a different structure with its own norms, and most of those norms exist to protect everyone involved, including you.
Velvet Rabbit lets members state exactly how they date, partnered and poly, solo, or open to a third, so questions like these are answered before the first conversation, not during it.
