Solo Polyamory: Why Some People Choose Freedom Over Hierarchy

Solo polyamory describes people who date multiple partners without prioritizing any one relationship as primary, and who generally don't aim toward the traditional markers of escalation like moving in together or merging finances. It's not a stepping stone toward eventually finding a primary partner. For a lot of solo poly people, staying unhierarchical and independent is the actual goal, not a placeholder.
This trips people up who are used to thinking of relationships as inevitably moving toward more entanglement over time. Solo poly people can be deeply committed to multiple partners while still valuing their own autonomy as a permanent, non-negotiable part of how they live, not just a phase before settling down.
What it's not
Solo poly isn't the same as being emotionally unavailable or commitment-phobic. Plenty of solo poly people are highly committed to their partners. They've just decided that commitment doesn't require merging their life into someone else's household, finances, or default decision-making. It's a structure, not an excuse.
Velvet Rabbit doesn't assume every relationship is building toward hierarchy or cohabitation, solo poly members can state exactly that on their profile.
