What Monogamous Couples Can Learn From Polyamorous Communication

Polyamorous relationships tend to require a level of explicit communication that monogamous relationships can often get away without, at least for a while. That's not a compliment to monogamy. It's more that monogamous couples can coast on assumed rules for years before those assumptions get tested.

Poly relationships don't have that luxury. Multiple partners means multiple sets of needs, schedules, and boundaries that all have to be actually discussed, not assumed. A few of those habits translate directly to any relationship, monogamous or not.

  • Regular check-ins about how the relationship is actually going, not just when something's already wrong.

  • Naming boundaries explicitly instead of assuming a partner already knows where the lines are.

  • Treating jealousy or insecurity as something to name and talk through, rather than something to hide out of embarrassment.

None of this requires opening up your relationship. It just requires borrowing the communication habits that non-monogamy makes mandatory and monogamy makes optional.

Velvet Rabbit borrows this same principle for every member, monogamous or not: explicit communication about intentions and boundaries, stated up front instead of assumed.
